PyLadies Dublin Oct Talks: Fraud detection with ML / Maker Project with CircuitPython / JupyterNotebook to Production

I'd like to thank all those who attended our meetup this month, and watching our videos, we appreciate your support as it took a lot of work to set it up, if you are curious, you can read Vicky's post about it:

Any feedback would be helpful to make this process smoother and easier to manage. πŸ₯°

This month, we are delighted to have Nabanita Roy and Lais Carvalho speaking this month along with myself. πŸ™Œ

A big thanks to Manning Publications who one of our community sponsors this month. They have offered 3 books to be raffled on the night of the event. Machine Learning Bookcamp by Alexey Grigorev.

And for those who want to get their hands on books from Manning, they offer a 35% discount. Use code mtppyladies20 (Valid for 4 months starting Mon Oct 19 2020) and visit http://mng.bz/P1gP.

A shout out to another of our community sponsors, Dublin Maker, we have been using their zoom for our talks each month.

πŸ† Winners were picked live after the talks, congrats to:

  • Joan Sweeney
  • Elena Nicola
  • Ajinkya Sakhare

This was our first time doing a raffle in a virtual event, we asked people to pop a "me" in the chat if they wish to be in the raffle. My co-organiser, Lei, helped gather the names.

I began the meetup with announcements, you can find them here: https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/edit/r1TwojBnTwa8PCAc8hdjKDmz/embed/

An Introduction to Fraud Detection using Machine Learning by Nabanita Roy

(15 mins) Fraud detection is an interesting use-case of machine learning where the machine is trained to detect patterns in fraudulent transactions and sieve them out. In this talk, I would discuss the different ways this has been achieved in the finance industry and combat fraud.

About Nabanita Roy

I am a Data Scientist at Fiserv. I completed my Masters in Computer Science - Intelligent Systems from Trinity College Dublin in 2018. Prior to that, I worked as a Systems Engineer at Infosys Limited. https://www.linkedin.com/in/nabanita-roy/

My On Air Sign with CircuitPython and Pi Zero by Vicky Twomey-Lee

(10 mins) With all the streaming, interviews with people for podcasts, why not make an On Air sign. Made with Pimoroni's Ubercorn, Pi Zero and CircuitPython, Vicky with give a show and tell of her Maker project.

About Vicky Twomey-Lee

From Jupyter to production-code, an easy conversion path by Lais Carvalho

(10 mins) Jupyter notebooks are great for EDA (Exploratory Data Analysis). The issue starts when one needs to convert those functions to production-code. Scripts quickly get messy and reproducibly stops being an easy achievable thing. In this LT I will show you how to start your EDA with Kedro and how easy it is to convert it all to nodes with an easy-frictionless conversion.

About Lais Carvalho

Developer advocate, IT student and Python enthusiast, I love data and all it can do. http://github.com/laisbsc/
