HBO Reveals New Details About Satoshi Nakamoto's Identity?

The mystery of the identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, is once again in the spotlight of the crypto community. This time, the debate was ignited by the premiere of the HBO documentary "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery" which took place on October 8, 2024.

Director Cullen Hoback makes a bold assumption in his 100-minute film: Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym of the creator of the first cryptocurrency, actually belongs to Canadian programmer Peter Todd.

So is Peter Todd really the same mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto? Is it possible that the creator of the first cryptocurrency was a well-known figure in the blockchain world all this time?

Let's analyze the available facts and arguments together to get closer to solving one of the greatest mysteries of the digital age.

Nakamoto is known to be the author of the white paper "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System" published in October 2008, and to have created the first online publication about the cryptocurrency on the P2P Foundation forum in February 2009. However, since 2011, Satoshi has completely disappeared from the online space, which makes it even more difficult to establish his identity.

It is worth noting that Satoshi's wallets currently hold more than 1.1 million bitcoins, which is equivalent to approximately $69 billion at the current exchange rate. Any transactions from these wallets can have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market, but they have remained static for many years.

Is Satoshi Nakamoto a real person?

For 13 years, many versions have been put forward regarding the identity of Satoshi Nakomoto. Among the most famous candidates were the physicist Dorian Nakamoto, the cryptographer Nick Szabo and the Australian Craig Wright, which was later disproved by a British court.

The film's director, Cullen Hoback, says he spent years studying different theories before settling on Todd's candidacy. He is confident that Todd's level of knowledge and skills is what it takes to create Bitcoin. He bases his assumptions on a number of circumstantial evidences, including posts from the old Bitcoiner forum.

The main piece of evidence in the film is Todd's comment under Satoshi's post in 2010, where he allegedly finished the Bitcoin creator's point. The authors suggest that Todd may have forgotten to change the account, after which both profiles ceased to be active.

Peter Todd's reaction to Cullen Hobak's documentary was overwhelmingly negative. According to CoinDesk, Todd vehemently rejected the filmmaker's suggestion that he could be the mysterious creator of Bitcoin.

Although Todd confirmed the fact of his interview for the film, he emphasized that the context of his statements was completely distorted.

Todd's concern went far beyond simple denial. He described the film as "irresponsible", emphasizing the potential threat to his safety. Moreover, the developer announced his intention to file a lawsuit against HBO.

Who is Peter Todd?

Canadian developer and cryptographer Peter Todd's journey began as a teenager, long before digital currencies became popular. At the age of 15, Todd was already in contact with future Bitcoin pioneers Hal Finney and Adam Beck, which laid the foundation for his future career.

Todd began his professional career in 2001 at Starnix, where he worked on supporting Linux systems. In 2008, around the time the Bitcoin white paper became available to the general public, Todd joined Gedex Inc. as an electronics designer.

Since 2014, he has been a Bitcoin Core developer at Coinkite, where he has focused on improving and securing the core software for the Bitcoin network. However, Todd's activities are not limited to Bitcoin. He has been actively involved in various blockchain projects, holding leadership positions at Mastercoin and Dark Wallet, an open bitcoin wallet that aims to enhance transaction anonymity. In 2015, Todd joined the Verisart board as an advisor, working on the development of a platform for digital collectibles.

One of Todd's most exciting projects is OpenTimestamps, an initiative offering a decentralized time-stamping service that demonstrates the breadth of his vision for the application of blockchain technology beyond the cryptocurrency industry. In addition, in 2016, he participated in setting up cryptographic keys for the Zcash project, which focuses on protecting user privacy.

Today, Peter Todd works as an independent applied cryptography consultant working with various Bitcoin startups. His expertise covers a wide range of issues, from the scalability of blockchain networks to guaranteeing the security of transactions. In addition, he is actively involved in educational initiatives aimed at increasing blockchain awareness among a wider audience.

What kind of man is this Todd?

Todd pays a lot of attention to social and political problems, for example, he speaks strongly negatively about wars, in particular aggression against Ukraine. Recently, he even visited Kyiv and gave his comments on what is happening there.

Frequent visits and close cooperation with Ukrainian crypto-enthusiasts highlight his interest in the development of the blockchain industry in Ukraine, which is showing significant progress. Which, by the way, is not surprising, because according to a recent study by Gradus Research, commissioned by WhiteBIT, one of the largest crypto exchanges in Europe of Ukrainian origin, every fourth Ukrainian owns cryptocurrency, which indicates the high popularity of digital assets in our country.

Todd is not limited only to the technical aspects of cryptocurrencies, but also actively supports Ukraine in a difficult time for the whole world.

His open position on aggression and calls for support for Ukraine are echoed in the crypto community. Todd's statement : "If I had 1 million bitcoins, there would be many more drones in Ukraine"

Let's summarize

HBO's documentary on the personality of Satoshi Nakamoto certainly drew attention to the figure of Peter Todd. However, despite the speculation, no convincing evidence of his involvement in the creation of Bitcoin has ever been provided. This situation once again emphasizes how intriguing the mystery of the creator of the first cryptocurrency remains.

At the same time, the discussion surrounding the film highlighted Peter Todd's significant contribution to the development of cryptocurrency technologies and his important role in the global blockchain community.
