Note: This is not medical advice.
Whether you're a Software developer, DevRel, Product Manager, or Technical Writer, working in the tech industry can be demanding, but prioritizing your health and well-being is essential for long-term success.
Here are 10 things I do (some I'm just starting) that'll help you maintain a healthy balance:
1. Get proper sleep π€
This is a no-brainer. Adequate sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to feel refreshed and energized.
2. Stay hydrated π§
Keep a water bottle handy and drink water regularly to stay hydrated and maintain focus.
3. Train and exercise daily ποΈββοΈ
It doesn't have to be 7 days per week but if you set a higher goal it helps stretch you. So if you achieve 5 days a week that's still fine. Physical activity boosts mood and productivity.
4. Eat healthy π
Fuel your body with nutritious foods to support energy levels and brain function. Listen to your body, you know what works best for you.
5. Change your work environment once in a while π
If you're doing remote work, sometimes try going outside, to a cafe, or garden. A change of scenery can stimulate creativity and prevent burnout.
6. Take regular breaks πΆπΎββοΈ
Don't just sit for 8 working hours, take breaks in between. Stand up, stretch, and recharge your mind and body.
7. Write an article π
Writing helps you think and clarify your thoughts and also helps exercise your brain (like this article I'm writing π)
Journal, create notes, write articles! It can be about your work routine or a topic you love - just start.
8. Attend meetups π€πΎ
Once in a while - network and connect with humans in person. I know the remote work vibe can be cool, but connecting with others can provide valuable insights and support.
9. Take it one day at a time π
Focus on the present moment and take each day as it comes. Avoid getting overwhelmed by breaking tasks into manageable steps and doing them one at a time.
10. Learn something new π¨
Find time to do something new outside of work - for me, this is drumming, music production, and learning Deutsch on the Memrise app. You can try painting, cycling,Β and singing. Just make it a habit to learn one new thing everyday.
Remember, your health is important for your overall happiness and success as a tech professional.
