Docs as Code: The Best Guide for Technical Writers

Recently, my work has involved writing a lot of documentation and. Doing this has introduced me to the concept of Docs as code. I have been developing and researching on this and it brought me to write this.
Traditionally, documentation has been a separate, often neglected, task. However, this new approach called "Docs as Code" is changing this.

What is Docs as Code?

Docs as Code is a methodology where documentation is treated like code. This means you use the same tools and processes for documentation that you use for code development. By doing this, you integrate documentation into the development process, making it a first-class citizen.

Fundamentals of Docs as Code

  1. Version Control: Use version control systems like Git to manage documentation. This allows you to track changes, collaborate, and revert to previous versions if needed.
  2. Continuous Integration: Automate the testing and deployment of documentation, just as you would with code.
  3. Code Reviews: Subject documentation to the same review processes as code, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  4. Plain Text Formats: Write documentation in plain text formats like Markdown or reStructuredText. This makes it easy to manage in version control systems and compatible with various tools.

Key principles of docs as code

Why Docs as Code?

Adopting the Docs as Code approach brings several benefits.

Docs as Code brings Improved Collaboration

When you treat documentation like code, it encourages collaboration. Developers, writers, and other stakeholders can contribute to the documentation using the same workflow. This collaborative environment ensures that documentation stays up-to-date and accurate.

Docs as code Enhances Consistency

Using version control and code reviews for documentation ensures consistency. Every change is tracked, reviewed, and approved, reducing the risk of outdated or incorrect information.

Docs as Code improves Automation and Efficiency

With Docs as Code, you can automate many aspects of documentation. For example, you can automatically generate documentation from code comments, run tests to ensure links work, and deploy updated documentation with every release. This automation saves time and reduces errors.

Docs as Code helps with Better Integration

By integrating documentation into the development process, it becomes a natural part of the workflow. This integration ensures that documentation is always in sync with the codebase, providing users with the most accurate and relevant information.

All you need to know about docs as code

Now that we understand the benefits, let’s look at how to implement Docs as Code in your workflow.

What are the Right Tools for your Docs as Code project

First, select the tools that best fit your needs. Popular tools for Docs as Code include:

How to Set Up Your Documentation Repository

Next, create a separate repository for your documentation or include it within your project’s main repository. Organize your files logically, using directories for different sections or types of documentation.

How to Establish a Documentation Workflow

Define a workflow for writing, reviewing, and deploying documentation. This might include:

  • Branching Strategy: Use branches to work on different sections or updates to the documentation.
  • Pull Requests: Submit changes via pull requests and have them reviewed by teammates.
  • Continuous Integration: Set up a CI pipeline to test and deploy documentation automatically.

How to write Docs in Plain Text Formats

Write your documentation in plain text formats like Markdown. These formats are easy to write and read, and they integrate well with version control systems. Use consistent styles and formatting to maintain readability.

Automate Your Docs Where Possible

Leverage automation to keep your documentation process efficient. Use tools to:

  • Generate Documentation: Automatically create documentation from code comments.
  • Run Tests: Check for broken links or other issues.
  • Deploy Updates: Automatically deploy new versions of your documentation site.

Why you should regularly Review and Update Your Docs

Finally, regularly review and update your documentation. Encourage contributions from all team members and keep an eye on user feedback to identify areas for improvement.

Conclusion

Docs as Code is a powerful approach that brings the rigor and efficiency of software development to documentation. By treating documentation like code, you improve collaboration, consistency, and integration. Implementing Docs as Code requires choosing the right tools, setting up a workflow, writing in plain text formats, and leveraging automation. With these steps, you can ensure your documentation is always accurate, up-to-date, and a valuable resource for your users.
