Getting Into Digital Humanities I

In the last article I wrote about the relatively new Master's program Digital Humanities at the University of Vienna, in which I am currently in the first semester.

I am almost halfway through the semester and the lectures are getting more exciting every time.

For two of the three lectures I finally decided on which topic I want to research.

Of course, it has something to do with accessibility.

Telling Data Stories - Diagrams, Graphs, Maps and other visual and physical representations of (research) data

In class we had to form groups on topics given by the professor. I chose the topic UI Design, where my group (consisting of 6 students) will talk about the design of different data displays.

Accessibility fits very well with this topic, which is why I chose this group in the first place.

I will be talking about how to create charts, graphs, and maps so that they are understandable and accessible to everyone, best practices, and more.

The talk will be at the end of January 2023.

Eye Tracking - Quantifying human gaze

For the eye-tracking course, I decided to investigate how people view a homepage from an accessibility perspective. Participants will look at different homepages for about 20 seconds and carefully check them for accessibility.

They will then have to answer some questions, such as whether they know what web accessibility means, which page they think is the most/worst accessible, etc.

The recording takes place today and I'm really looking forward to it.
