To be honest, I would not be so surprised if there is a shift in modern VR / AR technology over the next decade or so; and we transfer large headsets and cheap 3D or 360 displays to Extra, Ultra Hi-Def, holographic real-time displays. I'm talking about 8k or more of photos.

The next step is to transform the technology we currently have into smaller screens - such as the one in which the "contact lens" is inserted into your eye that allows you to see the "HUD" that remains.
