A little introduction.
One of the most important western philosophers of all time, Aristotle, said “Man is by nature a social animal”.
Since the beginning of society, humans have had the tendency to live and grow together in their societies, thus cause by nature we are always wishing for the best to our family, friends and relatives.
Long time ago people used to live in small villages, those palaces where strategic points where local people can trade value and information to the other people who were in the zone. The time passes and the villages evolve into urbanized cities, places where the population grows at a high level. Also, these cities were a front door for all of the people who live near these urbanizations and who were willing to transact value and information along with citizens.
Once again, the world evolved and society started to merge globally, this means that there were big corporations that trade around all the world, but commun people were out of this game until the internet appeared.
With a vehicle as the internet, now people can participate in the game and this is how Web1.0 and then it’s evolution Web2.0 appeared in the map.
Between 1992 and 2004 was the Web 1.0 era. In this time most of the pages were static or as they said in the hood (a very nerdy hood) “read only” pages.
Then when social media appeared, the habits changed, the web pages started to collect information of their users in order to provide them information based on their tastes and interests. This is the Web 2.0 era that spans from 2004 to the present.
In this era, the people started having the possibility to transact information and value but via a third party, although it was still a great enhancer of globalization. The problem with Web 2.0 is that there have been some abuses with the information of people and also having always an intermediate makes costs run higher → Thats why Web3.0 came to revert all these issues.
What is Web 3.0?
Max Mersh and Richard Muirhed defines Web 3.0 as:
enables a future where distributed users and machines are able to interact with data, value and other counterparties via a substrate of peer-to-peer networks without the need for third parties. The result: a composable human-centric & privacy preserving computing fabric for the next wave of the web.
In my words, this means that the paradigm changed. The aim of the Web 3.0 is to make people owners not products, this by using decentralization in order to avoid third parties and cryptography in order to protect data.
By using blockchain technology and IA as tools, in the web 3.0 we can transact value and information in a similar way as we do in the physical world (it’s an analogy). Let's imagine you buy a Hershey in a shop. When you pay for the chocolate there are two things that happen, the first one is that you pay to the cashier directly without any intermediary. The second thing that happened is that you don’t know the identity of the cashier and he doesn't know yours. Okay, so gratefully we can transact and use a bunch of decentralized applications in that way.
Thanks to smart contracts, the developments of decentralized and autonomous applications is posible. Consequently, web3 communities can move through a common economy that let people interact with the possibility of gaining and owning value in the form of cryptocurrencies and tokens like NFT's. This is highly powerfully , because for first time in the internet history, netizen can earn directly from internet.
Here an image from the metaverse review from Grayscale. They show the evolution of value captured by web communities.
Some benefits
Some websites that are constructed under the paradigm of Web 3.0 would have this benefits:
- Permission is not required, anyone on the network has permission to use a specific service.
- An account can not be blocked or deleted because there is not any centralized authority.
- Decisions are made by the participants of the network, so this one is always going to evolve for the benefit of their participants.
- This paradigm opens the door to the existence of decentralized autonomous organizations better known as DAO’s.
The paradigm changes, the values change.
Among the paradigm changes from Web 2.0 to 3.0, also the minds of those who are constructing Web 3.0 are different.
In this new era the tendency is that some websites and decentralized applications are constructed in the form of open source projects. This change allow as to think several things:
A good cause creates a good initiative:
At the moment there are lots of projects being constructed and what moves them are good causes. Decentralized Finances applications commonly are created by a bunch of developers that move in favor of a good cause, that is that people can use their technologies in order to have the possibility of using financial instruments that they can’t in the traditional banking system.
Freedom + Autonomy = More competitiveness.
As projects are open source, there are lots of developers that in their eagerness for creating a good improvement to the code, being fast is not only required skill. Creativity, good uses and simplicity are some of the skills that can make a developer's code stand out from the rest.
Freedom * Freedom = Faster evolution.
Those open source projects evolve in such a fast and quality ways. People are whiling to join this projects for pleasure, not cause of stability. When they are into the projects, the structure is not a common one, there is not a boss or someone who will give u orders. It's just you and some more people with different skills, thats why you would like to give your best, and enhance your skills to the limits.
It's not a coincidence that Web3 dapps, are the most technological and stylish platforms on the internet.
Web 2.0 vs Web 3.0
Here’s a table comparing Web2.0 vs Web3.0 and showing how the main aspects of those have changed.
This table is inspired on the one provided by GrayScale in their metaverse report paper.
Conclusions
As shown above, the tendency of societies is always to evolve and improve the ways in which we communicate. Web 3.0 is the latest way in which we can communicate with each other in this globalized world. Improving some aspects of the Web 2.0 that were causing a lot to talk about in the last years due to some privacy issues.
However Web 3.0 is the new paradigm, and it’s here to stay for a long time. We are just in the beginning of this internet evolution, so are you still thinking about joining this ultimate wave?
