Allowing any app on macOS

Gatekeeper is the security assessment system that controls what software is trusted and therefore allowed to run on your Mac. You can configure it to allow apps from the App Store, known developers, or anywhere.

You can control the system policy security with the spctl command. This example uses macOS Sequoia 15.1.

Check which options are currently enabled:

spctl --disable-status
The option to globally disable the assessment system is currently not available in System Settings.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

This shows you can only choose between App Store and App Store & known developers, which you can confirm in System Settings.

Enable the Anywhere option with:

spctl --global-disable
Globally disabling the assessment system needs to be confirmed in System Settings.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode
