As an experienced product manager and marketer, I'm often asked, “How do product strategy and marketing work together?” In my experience, aligning these functions is critical for any successful business.
When product and marketing teams collaborate closely, they can ensure that products solve real customer problems and deliver differentiated benefits.
Why Does Product Strategy Matter in Marketing?
Here's my take on why product strategy matters in marketing and how the two fit together.
1. Defining Your Target Customer
Ditch the dartboard marketing! Stop throwing your precious resources at the wrong audience. Building a winning marketing strategy starts with one crucial step: pinpointing your ideal customer.
You can narrow in on your ideal customer by asking questions like:
- Who are they?
- What do they care about?
- Where can you find them?
Product strategy helps answer these questions. By mapping out target user personas (get a template to help you here) and use cases, product strategy provides a clear picture of your core customer.
