Vuex

Vuex is a state management library for Vue.js applications that helps to manage and share state across all components of the application. In this article, we will explore Vuex with an example.

Imagine we have a simple Vue.js application with a counter component. The counter component has a button to increment the counter and a display to show the current value of the counter. Let's say we want to share the state of the counter between the counter component and another component, such as a sidebar component.

To achieve this, we can use Vuex. First, we need to install Vuex via NPM:

npm install vuex

Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Next, we need to create a store. The store is where we define our application state and mutations. In this example, our store will only have a single state property called "counter" and a mutation to increment the counter:

import Vue from 'vue'
import Vuex from 'vuex'

Vue.use(Vuex)

const store = new Vuex.Store({
  state: {
    counter: 0
  },
  mutations: {
    increment (state) {
      state.counter++
    }
  }
})

Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

We are using the Vue.use() method to install Vuex as a plugin in our application. We then create a new Vuex store with a state object containing our counter, and a mutation that increments the counter.

Now that we have our store, we need to integrate it into our counter component. We can do this by using the mapMutations helper from Vuex:

<template>
  <div>
    <h1>Counter: {{ counter }}</h1>
    <button @click="increment">Increment</button>
  </div>
</template>

<script>
import { mapMutations } from 'vuex'

export default {
  computed: {
    counter () {
      return this.$store.state.counter
    }
  },
  methods: {
    ...mapMutations([
      'increment'
    ])
  }
}
</script>

Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

We are using the mapMutations helper to map the increment mutation to a method called increment. We can then call this method when the user clicks the "Increment" button.

Finally, we need to integrate our sidebar component with our store. We can do this by using the computed property and mapState helper from Vuex:

<template>
  <div>
    <h2>Sidebar: {{ counter }}</h2>
  </div>
</template>

<script>
import { mapState } from 'vuex'

export default {
  computed: {
    ...mapState([
      'counter'
    ])
  }
}
</script>

Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

We are using the mapState helper to map the counter state to a computed property called counter. We can then display the value of the counter in our sidebar component.

And that's it! We have successfully shared the state of the counter between our counter component and sidebar component using Vuex. This is just a simple example, but Vuex can be used to manage much more complex state in larger applications. By using Vuex, we can centralize and manage our application state more effectively, making our applications more maintainable and easier to debug.

Ilyoskhuja Ikromkhujaev is a frontend developer with over 10 years of experience in web development. As a seasoned developer, he understands the importance of effective state management in large-scale applications. With Vuex, Ilyoskhuja has been able to simplify his codebase and manage his application state with ease.

In addition to managing state, Vuex also offers other features such as actions, getters, and modules that can help to further simplify and organize your code. Actions allow you to perform asynchronous operations and mutations, while getters allow you to retrieve and compute state values in a centralized way. Modules allow you to split your store into smaller, more manageable pieces, making it easier to maintain and scale your application.

Ilyoskhuja has found that using Vuex has helped him to create more maintainable and scalable applications. By centralizing his state management with Vuex, he has been able to reduce the amount of duplicated code and simplify the debugging process. With Vuex, Ilyoskhuja is confident in his ability to manage even the most complex state in his applications.
