Every website looks the same, and that’s ok

Web Design goes through cycles.

A common complaint designers have is that every website looks the same.

And I am sure you have noticed it too. Most websites follow the same formula:

  • Big image with text
  • Small paragraph
  • Logo to the left or in the middle
  • Small CTA in the bottom right corner

I chose a random website. Allbirds was the first brand I thought of.

This is proof that web design is becoming bland for some designers. Or that we have placed creativity on the back burner.

Nonsense.

We are in a design cycle. All websites are supposed to look the same for a few years.

While I still sometimes wish the Flash Websites era would come back. The web has become more accessible and user-friendly in recent years - and I think that is more important than crazy layouts.

The first page of the Web Design Museum showcasing flash websites

I love visiting Awwwards; there are a lot of designers doing unique websites. But most of those websites are dead a few years in. In my opinion, that is because the design is placed before business needs.

And the most crucial business need is to make the website easy to use.

I think bootstrap and foundation have shaped web design looks for the better. Tailwind is doing its part. But these frameworks should be used as starter files, not as the design system itself.

Only then can web design push the limits of creativity

Books haven’t changed much in centuries. Let’s take a page out of that book. Pun intended.

Small Addendum. I visited Awwwards while I was looking for examples. They Changed the nav bar to a dynamic floating island at the bottom. It took me forever to be able to visit a site.

While it is not a big deal when visiting a design site. They would have lost my business if it were an eCommerce or a service website.

How do you even navigate this site??
