Legacy No More: Deprecated JavaScript Methods to Know About

Here are some methods and features in JavaScript that have been deprecated or are considered obsolete and should be avoided in modern code:

1. escape() and unescape()

These functions were used for encoding and decoding strings but have been deprecated in favor of encodeURI(), encodeURIComponent(), decodeURI(), and decodeURIComponent().

// Deprecated
const encoded = escape('Hello World!');
const decoded = unescape(encoded);

// Modern
const encodedURI = encodeURI('Hello World!');
const decodedURI = decodeURI(encodedURI);

2. document.write()

This method is still functional but considered bad practice as it can overwrite the entire document if used after the page has loaded.

// Deprecated
document.write('<h1>Hello World!</h1>');

// Modern alternative
document.body.innerHTML = '<h1>Hello World!</h1>';
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

3. with Statement

The with statement is deprecated as it makes code difficult to understand and debug.

// Deprecated
with (obj) {
    a = 1;
    b = 2;
}

// Modern alternative
obj.a = 1;
obj.b = 2;
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

4. __proto__

Directly accessing the __proto__ property is deprecated. Use Object.getPrototypeOf() and Object.setPrototypeOf() instead.

// Deprecated
const proto = obj.__proto__;

// Modern alternative
const proto = Object.getPrototypeOf(obj);
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

5. Function.prototype.arguments and Function.prototype.caller

These properties are deprecated due to their potential to create security issues and non-standard behavior.

function example() {
    // Deprecated
    console.log(example.caller);
    console.log(arguments);
}

// Modern alternative
function example(...args) {
    console.log(args);
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

6. String.prototype.substr()

substr() is deprecated in favor of substring() and slice().

// Deprecated
const str = 'Hello World';
const subStr = str.substr(1, 4); // 'ello'

// Modern alternatives
const subStr1 = str.substring(1, 5); // 'ello'
const subStr2 = str.slice(1, 5); // 'ello'
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

7. Event.returnValue

This property is deprecated. Use Event.preventDefault() instead.

element.addEventListener('click', (event) => {
    // Deprecated
    event.returnValue = false;

    // Modern alternative
    event.preventDefault();
});
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

8. NodeIterator.expandEntityReferences

This property has been deprecated. It's not needed in modern web development as the parser handles entities automatically.

// Deprecated
const iterator = document.createNodeIterator(document.body, NodeFilter.SHOW_ALL, null, false);
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

9. XMLHttpRequest Synchronous Requests

Synchronous XMLHttpRequest is deprecated and should be avoided in favor of asynchronous requests or fetch().

// Deprecated
const xhr = new XMLHttpRequest();
xhr.open('GET', 'https://api.example.com/data', false); // false makes it synchronous
xhr.send();

// Modern alternative
fetch('https://api.example.com/data')
    .then(response => response.json())
    .then(data => console.log(data));
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

10. HTMLDocument.prototype.all

The all property is deprecated. Use standard DOM methods like document.querySelectorAll() instead.

// Deprecated
const elements = document.all;

// Modern alternative
const elements = document.querySelectorAll('*');
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

These deprecated features should be avoided in modern JavaScript development to ensure compatibility, security, and maintainability of your code.
