According to Investopedia, Web 2.0 is the current state of the internet, which has more user-generated content and usability for end-users compared to its earlier incarnation; while Web 3.0 is the third generation of internet services for websites and applications that will focus on using a machine-based understanding of data to provide a data-driven and Semantic Web.
Web 2.0 is the current version of the web with which we are all familiar, while Web 3.0 represents its next phase that will be decentralized, open, and of greater utility.
In general, web2 websites are static and have limited functionality and flexibility; and web3 is a semantic web directing attention to the future.
Web 2.0 website allows users to interact and collaborate with each other through social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community.
On the other hand, Web3 is a collection of JS libraries that lets you interact with an Ethereum node remotely or locally; by simply providing users with an API to use and easily work with the blockchain. Web3 works as a wrapper for JSON RPC to connect to a remote or local Ethereum node with either a HTTP or IPC connection.
Examples of Web 2.0 sites include Wikipedia, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and various blogs. These sites have transformed the way the same information is shared and delivered previously. Innovations such as smartphones, mobile Internet access, and social networks have driven its exponential growth. While some good examples of Web 3.0 applications are Bitcoin, Steemit, etc.
Web 2.0 uses languages such as Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, Enterprise Java (J2EE), and Microsoft.NET framework. While Web 3.0 uses Solidity.
Solidity is a contract-oriented, high-level language for implementing smart contracts. It was influenced by C++, Python and JavaScript and is designed to target the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Solidity is statically typed, supports inheritance, libraries and complex user-defined types among other features.
