Deploy a NodeJS application to Google App Engine and Cloud SQL from GitHub - Part 2: CI/CD pipeline ⚙️

The post will include a series of questions that I asked and answered myself to approach the solution. This is more about describing my personal experience, not a full tutorial on the topic so many steps and concept explanations will be omitted. Correction to any of the errors is welcome!

Problem Statement 🍀

With components discussed in part 1, I want to deploy a "Hello World" NodeJS application from GitHub to Google App Engine. Essentially, the back end will return a "Hello World" response upon reaching an endpoint. As it is for testing, I will try deploying only the back end, so both the front end and database are not involved.

Does GCP have some free options like Heroku? 🤔

Luckily, yes! However, it is not as clear as Heroku. I need to read this official document to learn more about the offers. There is no indicator in the interface like Heroku.

App Engine itself has two variations: Standards and Flexible. Only the Standard version has a free offer. Meanwhile, the flexible version is more advanced and I do not need its features (e.g., Docker imaging, custom runtime, etc.), so the Standard version is my choice.

What does Instance Hours mean? 🤔

After a while, if there is no HTTP call to an App Engine instance, it will sleep. During this period, Instance Hours will not be counted.

This metric is counted across projects. Let's say I have two projects with App Engine enabled, assuming both serve requests 24/7. In one day, I use 48 Instance Hours. We have 28 hours of free usage per day, so only 20 hours is charged. Anyway, this quota is more than enough for my use case.

Are there some core GCP concepts that I need to know beforehand? 🤔

  1. Identity Access Management (IAM): Essentially, this is used to control user permissions and access to resources. It contains 3 main parts.
    • Principal: Indicate an end-user, service account, or group of entities. The username is an email address.
    • Roles: It resembles a hierarchy in any organization. A manager will have more privileges compared to an intern and so on. In other words, a role itself contains a set of permission.
    • Policy: A collection of role binding, which binds one or more principals to individual roles.
  2. Service accounts: Some services in GCP can be treated as an individual, which is equivalent to an end-user. In other words, a service account represents a specific GCP service. That service uses a provided entity to access another service just like end-users. image.png

Time to enable App Engine for the project, what do I need to know? 🤔

  • App Engine region cannot be changed. Also, unlike other services such as Google Compute Engine (GCE), I cannot just delete App Engine and set up everything again. I need to delete the whole project instead.

  • It seems there is no concept of "instance" in App Engine (even though Instance Hours exists!!!). In GCE, we can create multiple VM instances. However, in App Engine, there are services, which is somewhat equivalent to GCE instances, but it is not as configurable. App Engine configuration is applied via a yaml file.

  • App Engine will generate a default service account when it is first created. If a default service account is deleted, the deployment will fail (code 503). The username of the App Engine default service account follows this format: YOUR_PROJECT_ID@appspot.gserviceaccount.com. This account is used to manage the App Engine deployment process (steps such as install dependencies, build, manage service versions, etc.)

  • As of February 2022, Google is previewing user-managed service accounts. Screenshot 2022-02-06 190351.png That said, I have no luck in using a user-managed service account. The error below keeps popping up even though both the default App Engine accounts and my user-managed service account have the same roles.

Talking about a CI/CD workflow on GitHub, what will it contain? 🤔

  • There are 2 core parts authentication to GCP and App Engine deployment. Authentication is performed using auth, while a deployment uses deploy-appengine.

  • There are 2 ways to perform authentication, using Service Account Key JSON or Workload Identity Federation. The former is much more straightforward but less secure. To achieve the JSON key, I need to download one from GCP and store it in GitHub Secrets. At some point in the process, I may accidentally commit the key or expose the file to unauthorized personnel. There are various risks with a JSON key, so I will go with Workload Identity Federation instead.

How to set up Workload Identity Federation (WIF) in GCP? 🤔

This article from Google provides an explanation (using gsutil tool). The gcloud commands map one to one to the GUI, so I used the GUI instead.

Seems like something is missing. Which account should I connect to the WIF pool? 🤔

Indeed, a necessary account is not created at this point. When running a workflow on GitHub, essentially it produces a VM to automate the tasks. Let's think about it, if I use gsutil on the local machine, I need to authenticate with my account. My local machine will use my identity. In other words, I need a GCP account so the VM created by the workflow can use.

That account must be usable by deploy-appengine action, so we need a service account with the following roles.

  1. App Engine Admin
  2. Service Account User
  3. Storage Admin
  4. Cloud Build Editor

Have I reached a deployable state? 🤔

Not quite, a yaml configuration file for App Engine deployment is still missing. The official documentation can be found here. A sample file structure is like this.

The provided code above is enough to make deploy-appengine work. If checking at the configuration preview in the App Engine panel, Versions section (after a successful deployment), it seems deploy-appengine adds several more key-value pairs to a deployed yaml file. For example,

We have an up and running App Engine now, but why do we have a 5xx error when reaching an endpoint? 🤔

In Heroku, by default, everything is shown in the log section, even statements such as console.log.

GCP is the same but requires a bit more configuration to show proper log levels and messages. Official documentation on this matter can be found here.

Now, make sure my application is listening to port 8080 because App Engine uses that. My "Hello World" NestJS application works perfectly fine locally, even with port 8080, but it fails in an App Engine environment. Looking at GCP Log Explorer, there is a pattern below.

nest: not found here may indicate a nest command in @nestjs/cli, so I moved the package from devDependencies to dependencies. That is not enough to solve the problem. In a production environment, the files are compiled and stored in dist folder. I attempted to change "start" script to "start": "node dist/main.js" and it works this time. Well, the new "start" is actually a default "start:prod" provided by NestJS.

Why is the 5xx error still here? 🤔

When looking at Log Explorer, I notice the pattern is as followed.

After some digging, it appears I have to add "gcp-build": "npm run build" to package.json. It seems this step is run whenever the build and deploy process happens. What makes me wonder is, why was the deployment a success? It should fail if that script was missing. Instead, it immediately crashes App Engine when a request comes. I'm still not certain why that is the case.

Great, now I have a working "Hello World" endpoint. However, is this enough for a more complex application? 🤔

In GitHub, we have GitHub Secrets to store environment variables. However, they are only available to VMs created for workflow in GitHub. Using deploy-appengine, the action will first upload files to GCP, then the rest happen inside the GCP environment. GitHub Secrets are not available there.

In other words, some secrets such as workload_identity_provider which is required for the auth action in GitHub workflow. Meanwhile, runtime-required secrets and variables need to stay in the GCP environment, but how?

In Heroku, we can manually configure the environment variables image.png Unfortunately, Google App Engine does not have an equivalent feature. However, there are 2 ways that I am aware of to workaround.

  1. Using app.yaml
    In the configuration file, we can declare environment variables. For example:

     runtime: nodejs16
     env_variables:
        DATBASE_PASSWORD: MyPassword
    

    A very big problem is these are plain text and can be seen freely in GCP Debugger. This is a serious security issue and there are many discussions on this too. In my opinion, we should never store secrets in there, **only insensitive environment variables are allowed, such as a PORT number. ** Screenshot 2022-02-07 094816.png

  2. Using Secret Manager image.png

From this one, I learned that it is possible to get secrets asynchronously, which also means it is more complex to set up though. Secret Manager is a different service, not included in App Engine. Therefore, an App Engine default service account needs a Secret Manager Secret Accessor role to read the secrets.

Wrap Up 🍀

It is important to remember that local and cloud are two different environments. Running locally does not mean it will work in a cloud environment, even the purpose is only to get an application up and running on GAE (no complex cloud architecture design involved). Initially, I thought only GAE and Cloud SQL will be used, and look what we have now.

  1. App Engine (GAE)
  2. Cloud SQL
  3. Secret Manager
  4. Cloud Build
  5. IAM / Workload Identity Federation
  6. Cloud Logging

I guess it will only be more down the road, but we will see.
