Introduction
Image Optimization is one of the most crucial parameters for optimizing web performance. In this era of 5G, we sometimes forget to optimize images on our React app, which results in slower application. In many parts of the world, the internet is still slow and takes a lot of time to load the pages. As frontend developers, we have to think about all the users. Our goal is to make the web apps faster. This blog will help you in your journey to make your web app faster.
Implement Lazy Loading:
It is the best and most used image optimization technique. Implement lazy loading for images, which means loading images only when they come into the user's viewport. This technique reduces the initial page load time and saves bandwidth for the user.
const App = () => {
return (
<div>
<img src="image.jpg" loading="lazy" height="300px" width="300px" />
</div>
);
}
Using CDNs:
CDNs or Content Delivery Networks are also very helpful while serving images on the web. CDNs distribute the images across multiple servers worldwide, reducing latency and improving loading speeds for users from different regions.
Libraries for Image Component:
Use popular image component libraries in your React app like react-image, react-lazy-load-image-component, or react-responsive-image that come with built-in optimization features.
WebP or AVIF Format:
Consider using the modern WebP or AVIF image format, which provides better compression and quality compared to JPEG and PNG formats. However, ensure to provide fallbacks for browsers that don't support WebP or AVIF.
Using Responsive Image:
Always provide different image sizes based on the user's device screen size and resolution. This will ensures that users on different screen sizes receive appropriately sized images, improving load times and visual quality.
Compress Images:
Don't use any image directly in your code. Always compress your images to reduce their file size without losing too much quality. You can use various tools and libraries like imagemin or TinyPNG to compress images before including them in your React application.
The srcSet Attribute:
In React world, you can use the srcSet attribute to provide multiple image sources with different resolutions for different devices. Browsers can choose the most appropriate image based on the user's screen size and resolution.
const Card = () => {
return (
<div>
<img
src="small-image.jpg"
srcSet="small-image.jpg 300w, medium-image.jpg 600w, large-image.jpg 900w"
alt="Responsive Image"
/>
</div>
);
}
export default Card;
Summary
In this blog, we have discussed some of the most popular image optimization techniques in React. Also, most of them you can use in other Frontend frameworks also. If you like this blog and you want to learn more about Frontend Development and Software Engineering you can follow me on Dev.to.
