this article is spot on. This guy mentions that too. A senior is one who provides value to the company, but more likely one who would provide more than a junior would.(edited)

The criteria for becoming a senior engineer at a ten-person startup will be different from a FAANG company.

To give that perspective, there is a process for checking the right boxes as everything is data driven. When you want to go to next level, ask your manager to plan projects that take you to it. Without this you’ll keep delivering projects of same level and not be able to use that data much. Like I saw some people working too much on automating operations task but not enough features or vis versa. Once they and you think that you are ready, assessment is done. A senior from another organisation accesses your code and system designs. Then feedback is collected from many of your peers. All this goes to someone up the hierarchy, who finally approves or declines it based on data.
