A Guide To Dimensions Of Prosociality

Prosociality or Prosocial behavior is an act that works to provide benefits to others. Such as helping, sharing, and comfort at all levels. Prosocial behavior can be performed for multiple reasons like get something in return or other-oriented reasons. But it is presented for material or social reward. It is based on other’s moral values.

What Thing Motivates Prosocial Behavior?

As we know that self-love is on the top priority, but in prosociality, people help others and put their lives in danger. It might be a question, why people engage in helping behaviors that are beneficial to others but difficult for the person who is actually performing that action.
According to psychological studies, many parents train their kids to show kindness with others, or they encourage helping hands. However, still, people will not harm themselves for the sake of others until they get benefits from them.
The egoistic reason, reciprocal benefits, and altruistic motives are found as the main reasons for prosocial behavior. Three main reasons are said to be most beneficial for prosocial behavior:

  • Ego-centric for improving self-image
  • Reciprocal to get benefit in return
  • Altruistic to get empathy from others

TYPES OF PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR

For external reward

As discussed above, the external reward is social rewards that can be received from the individual you helped before. Or we can say that it’s a return reward.

b) Not for an external award

Self-reward is not for the external reward. It means a person who is helping others just wants to build a good image in front of others.

c) Pure altruism

Pure altruism is one of the best types that doesn’t use for external or internal rewards. It is just for the sake of empathy. The psychologist also explained altruism’s help behavior to clear the mentality. According to research, altruism is the only prosocial behavior that is generously motivated. It motivates the people to help others without any gift or big reward.

DIMENSIONS OF PROSICIALITY

There are various dimensions of prosociality that everyone should keep in mind. These dimensions will help you to know about which stage you are standing in. It means how you are helping others and what is your purpose.

Trustful behavior to help the need of other

Trustful behavior means you are helping others voluntarily. You can help others by providing them money for their personal use, or you can give them food as well. It is also known as the welfare that helps needy people, especially those who cannot afford it. It doesn’t require any big reward for this, but only empathy and a good image will works.

2. Obedient behavior is for responsive request

Obedient behavior is another dimension of prosociality. It is only done by helping others in response to a request. It means if someone request for help, you will help them socially because you just want to make them happy. It does not need any reward. A smile and good wishes will make your day satisfied and happy. So, try to be an obedient helper while helping others.

3. Emotional behavior for helping people emotionally

Some people are very needy. They have not enough money to get food for their kids. That’s why they ask for them emotionally. If you are helping someone under emotional condition, then this behavior is called Emotional. You might feel bad for them at that time, but trust me, you will feel so relaxed after helping them financially or any other good deeds.

4. Public behavior to gain approval & respect for self-worth

There is no doubt that people always search for the reward, but public behavior is the best dimension of the prosociality that needs the approval and respect of others. If you are one who wants to gain self-worth in front of others, then you can start helping poor people in a public behavior style. Just show your good image to them, fulfill the needs of others, and get good wishes as well. It will show you what you feel and analyze yourself. Don’t forget; self-esteem always refers to positive and negative feelings that we have about ourselves.

5. Anonymous behavior for voluntary help

Helping voluntarily is known as anonymous behavior. It means you are helping something without looking for any reward or return help. It can be performed without the knowledge of who is helped. Don’t see if you are helping a rich man or a low-income family. It is just a voluntary help that makes an individual happy who is helped and the helper as well for his good deed.

6. Terrible support for an emergency

Assisting others in crises or emergency circumstances called terrible help. If a person needs medical assistance, for instance, they are looking for medicines or had an accident that needs expensive treatment. You can help them financially as well as support them with love and care so that they will feel relax and helpful. This is one of the toughest and hard behaviors of humans that cannot be possible for everyone to do. But one who can do is very strong and active.
