Auto Vacuum Process
Databases are dynamic entities that experience continuous changes due to data additions, updates, and deletions. These operations can lead to fragmentation and the presence of dead space within the database files. PostgreSQL addresses this concern through its autovacuum process, which efficiently identifies and reclaims empty space. By doing so, it effectively reduces database bloat, ensuring the overall health and performance of the database are well-maintained.
Protecting Data Durability
Data durability is a critical aspect for any database system. When data is modified in the shared buffers of the database's memory cache, it becomes necessary to write it to the physical storage. This crucial task is handled by the checkpointer process, which ensures that all committed transactions are securely stored on disk. In the event of a system failure, this process plays a crucial role in safeguarding the data and significantly reducing the risk of data loss.
Maintaining Transaction Logs
To guarantee the durability and consistency of transactions, PostgreSQL utilizes a technique known as write-ahead logging (WAL). The write-ahead log serves as a reliable backup of the database's state and is consistently updated with all the modifications made by the WAL writer processes. This log plays a crucial role in PostgreSQL's crash recovery process, allowing it to recover from system failures and restore the database's consistency to a desired state.
Increasing Cache Effectiveness
The shared buffers, which hold data that has recently been read from disc or updated, are managed by the background writer process, which supports the work of the WAL writers. It makes sure that the most crucial data is kept in memory, which enhances query performance and lessens the need for continual disc reading.
Initializing the database upon startup
Upon launching a PostgreSQL instance, the database system is initialized through a startup process. This pivotal process takes charge of initiating other background processes, reading configuration files, and establishing essential memory structures. Once the system has completed its initialization, this startup procedure transitions seamlessly into a routine background operation, ensuring the smooth and continuous functioning of the PostgreSQL instance.
Archiving WAL Files with The Archiver
The archiver process is useful in situations when maintaining point-in-time recovery alternatives is required. The write-ahead logs are copied and archived to a different location, allowing you to restore your database to a certain period and assuring data consistency and recoverability.
Replication of Data and High Availability
PostgreSQL offers various replication types, enabling users to offload read activities and create backup databases for high availability. Data consistency across multiple instances is maintained through replication processes like the replication sender and replication receiver, responsible for managing data transfer between primary and standby databases.
